Ore-forming porphyry stocks, including pyroxene–diorite porphyry and diorite porphyry, intrude the marine carbonate rocks and have been assigned U–Pb zircon ages of 122.4 ± 0.8 Ma and 128.6 ± 1.2 Ma, respectively. Gold-bearing orebodies occur mainly at or near contacts between diorite porphyry and surrounding carbonate rocks and have an obvious stratiform nature. Two types of gold-bearing orebody are recognized at Jiaochong: (1) Pyrrhotite + pyrite-dominated orebodies, which account for ∼ 80 % of the total gold-bearing orebodies, have a distribution that is governed by the fracture system and are concentrated in the outer contact zone between porphyry intrusions and carbonates with high dip angles of 35°–70° or in the hinge zones of folds; and (2) colloform pyrite + sphalerite-dominated orebodies with variable thickness of 8–50 cm are distributed on the outside of pyrrhotite + pyrite-dominated gold orebodies, subparallel to the carbonate wall-rocks.
