Ancient iron mines operated in the 19th and 20th centuries. Baryte veins cutting iron ore were worked between 1950 and 1982.
The incorrect name "Montauch" is given on some maps.
The French name "Grande carrière de Montauch" is misleading because the mines are open-pit mines, not a large quarry ("Grande carrière").
