Emerald-bearing dykes and sills, hosted in Ordovician rocks.
The emerald deposits of the Panjshir valley border on the fault zone separating the Hindu Kush and Western Nuristan blocks. They are hosted by metamorphic schists and plutonic rocks, that have been subjected to intense hydrothermal alteration. The mineralization mainly occurs in cavities, irregularly scattered along a fracture network, associated with Na-K-B-metasomatism (albite, tourmaline, biotite-muscovite), and the precipitation of pyrite and calcite. Emeralds have a very low Fe content and their colour is mainly due to the presence of Cr3+ and V5+.
