Maybe the most famous quarry in the Somma-Vesuvius complex.
Most of the minerals for which the quarry is famous have been found in xenolithic ejecta, including nodules of subvolcanic syenite (sanidinite), cumulate rocks (e.g., pyroxenite) and skarns, in the central to upper stratigraphic units of the pyroclastic sequence of the Bronze Age Avellino pumice eruption (3945 ± 10 cal BP). However, minerals also occur in xenoliths in the pyroclastic deposits of more recent Plinian and Subplinian eruptions, i.e. the 79 AD "Pompeii" Plinian eruption, and the 472 AD and 1631 AD Subplininan eruptions.
According to Campostrini & Russo (2022), the Somma-Vesuvius biotites are most commonly referable to phlogopite, most rarely to fluorophlogopite. At San Vito Quarry, in particular, fluorophlogopite has been analytically determined in a metamorphosed ejectum.
"Merlinoite" crystals are usually composite crystals in which domains of both merlinoite and phillipsite-K coexist. Furthermore, the apparent single crystals very often consist of intergrowths of several individuals (Russo & Preite, 2011).

Sodalite (~5%) is present as poikilitic crystals intergrown with euhedral sanidine; mafic minerals include clinopyroxene (15%) and opaque Fe-Ti oxides (10%); fluorcalciopyrochlore, baddeleyite, fluorite and britholite-(Ce) occur as late-stage accessory phases. |
