Name(s) in local language(s):
Obří důl
Two major (Helena and Gustav) and several minor (Václav etc.) contact skarn bodies developed at the contact of mantle rocks with granite of Krkonoše-Jizerský Pluton. Ore minerals are mostly pyrrhotite and sphalerite. In some minerals (garnets, epidote) isomorphic admixture of tin is known. Quartz veins with rock crystal, fluorite, scheelite, albite, and pumpellyite are connected with later tectonic activity.
Obří důl (German: Riesengrund) is the name of a valley that stretches between the foot of Sněžka and Pec pod Sněžkou. The valley was formed by the action of a Quaternary glacier up to 100 m thick. There used to be various metal ore mines here. At the former Kovárna hut, there is a mine of the same name, which has been open to the public since 2004. Today, the blue-marked route 1813 leads here to Obří sedlo, in the summer passing to the top of Sněžka, closed in the winter months due to the danger of frequent avalanches. This area is part of the Krkonoše National Park.
The Úpská pit is a glacial karst forming the upper end of Obří důl. Its slopes are up to 600 m high.
