The Johnston's United Mine is located between the divide separating the Bedstead and Wakefield gullies and located near Rockville.

The lode was discovered by Thomas Adams and party in 1866. The ore was capped by a limonitic gossan, and the Adams party began breaking it apart and washing gold from it. In 1869, the Perseverance Company was formed in Nelson by James Bennett. The company picked out the richest patches, but when more money was requested from shareholders, they refused, the mine closing in the early 1870's.

In 1879, a new company called the Johnston's United Company was formed, with a battery erected in Wakefield Gully, achieving about 20 000 ounces, before the mine closed in 1897. The mine was the only successful quartz lode operation on the goldfield.

The Johnston's United lode had a rich limonitic gossan cap on the surface, and supergene enriched gold immediately underneath, in fine grained graphitic phyllites and schists. The Haupiri Group rocks are above the ore body of medium grained micaeous schist, containing quartz, muscovite, K feldspar, biotite, garnet, chlorite, albite and calcite.

The lode is 1 to 2 feet wide, occasionally 15 feet. The ore zone extends to 50 feet below the surface of dark brown to yellow sphalerite, galena, pyrite, arsenopyrite, gold, minor chalcopyrite and tetrahedrite, with limonite staining and sugary quartz. The mine was worked to a depth of 215 feet, however gold grades here were lower, with quartz and pyrite the only other minerals.
