Old asbestos mine, operated between the middle 1950s and early 1970s, located at the foot of Monte Auriol near the border with Casteldelfino municipality.

Auriol mine is the type locality for carlosturanite (Compagnoni et al., 1985), which appears as bundles of light brown, flexible fibres, up to several tens of centimetres in length along the [001] direction. The mineral is intergrown with fibrous diopside, garnet (andradite with fibrous habit) and antigorite, and often partly substituted by chrysotile and brucite. It develops in a close network of veins (from 0.1 mm to several centimetres thick) randomly crosscutting the serpentinite. Usually other associated minerals can include opaque ore minerals (magnetite and Ni-Fe alloys); locally, titanclinohumite, perovskite, and a green uvarovite-rich garnet are also found. Carlosturanite was mistaken in the past for fibrous serpentine and it has commonly been called metaxite or metaxitic serpentine (Zucchetti, 1968) or xylotile. Carlosturanite-bearing veins are crosscut by the later monomineralic veins of antigorite, chrysotile, brucite, and magnesite.

Parallel intergrowth between [010] carlosturanite, [001] diopside, and [100] chrysotile fibres occurs in extremely variable degrees from macroscopic to TEM scale; at the latter scale brucite occurs in the presence of abundant chrysotile. Single fibers of carlosturanite are seldom larger than 0.2 μm.
