Located 10.5 miles SE of Julian in NW¼ sec. 3, T14S, R5E, SBM, on the southwest side of Mason Valley, in a ravine on the east side of a small group of hills, at N32.98162, W116.46216, at an elevation of 2,425 feet. Reportedly owned by D. G. Ingraham in 1939. It is named after the Mason family, desert pioneer farmers in this area.
NOTE: The original Township is erroneously described as 13S in the County Report according to the original database entry.
Mineralization is a pegmatite deposit reported to contain lepidolite and tourmaline.
Workings include surface and underground openings. The prospect is developed by two small cuts and a short adit.
In 1939 John W. Hilton described the 100 feet adit and the minerals listed, but none found was of gem stone quality.
Members of the San Diego Mineral & Gem Society have visited the site many years ago and found grossulars similar, but smaller, than the ones shown by Rob Lavinsky.
In 1999 remains of these activities could still be seen but the adit portal could not be located.
