A former B-borate occurrence/mine located in sec. 25, T10N, R1W, SBM,about 8 km WSW of Calico and 0.9 km (0.6 mile) N of Lead Mountain [2] (coordinates of record) and about 9.6 km ENE of Barstow (at the N base of Lead Mountain [2]). Operated during the period 1900 to 1907. Owned by the Standard Sanitary Company, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1907- ). Operated by the American Borax Company (1904- ). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 10 meters. The Southern Pacific Co. . erroneously reports this site in Kern County. Other references list the mine in San Bernardino County.
Mineralization is hosted in the Miocene Barstow Formation (lake sediments and shale). The ore body is 6.2 meters thick. The deposit consists of B-bearing shale. The borate minerals are microscopic and the shale averaged 4 to 8% B2O3 over a stratigraphic thickness of 6.2 meters. Yale (1905) reported an ore grade as high as 7% to 30% B2O3. Local rocks include Miocene nonmarine rocks and/or Plio-Pleistocene and Pliocene loosely consolidated deposits.
Local geologic structures include faulting and folding.
Workings include surface and underground openings comprised of a 122 meter inclined shaft with extensive drifts.
