Ref.: Bull. Minéral. , 1987, 110, pp. 131-144.

Located 80 km south of Hanksville.
Henry Mountains Mineral Belt, Henry basin synclinal (Colorado Plateau).

Sediment-hosted coffinite deposit in Salt Wash Member of Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation (fluviolacustrine sandstones and mudstones in a thick subsiding sequence).
Tabular V-U deposits rich in organic matter (plant debris) : 2-3 layers separated by V-rich layers (barren of U).
Un undetermined vanadium oxide fills pore spaces.
Coffinite is associated with V-rich chlorite (intergrowths), with pyrite replacing abundant undetermined Fe/Ti oxides and with detrital quartz.

Ore-body formed at a density-stratified solution interface between uranyl-ion bearing meteoritic slightly alkaline circulating water and a saline fluid (brine derived from sea water) locally reducing (presence of aqueous sulfides generated by bacterial metabolism of sulfates in the presence of organic matter).

The next phase was adsorption of U onto detrital minerals surface. Adsorption is related to a pH difference between the two fluids (clay-forming reactions depressed the pH of the saline fluid to less than neutral).

Adsorption facilitated reduction of uranyl to adsorbed U 5+ and insoluble U 4+.
The adsorbed reduced U bonded with aqueous silica (highly concentrated monomeric silica) to form coffinite.
Silica was carried by meteoritic waters (alteration of volcanic ashes increased the pH) and depolymerized by high salinity, decreased pH and aqueous Al.
Bonding of monomeric silica took place with U 5+, so coffinite precipitated instead of uraninite.
