A specimen - gemstone mine (chrysoberyl) in pegmatite. Once owned by Nathaniel H. Perry (1870's). Oxford pegmatite field.

(NOTE: This site is often incorrectly listed as being in the town of Norway, immediately to the south. There may be sites on hill to the south of the Greenwood town line; but the main collecting locality is in Greenwood.) [The inclusion of sillimanite on the mineral list is not a mistake - its presence in fibrous form is an unusual characteristic of the rock here.]
(Inaccurately located by Morrill, 1958).

The locality is reached by going west from the town of Norway on route 118 and up the Greenwood Road. When you cross in Greenwood from Norway the next road East where the Richardson Hollow Road turns east towards West Paris. Leave the Richardson Hollow Road toward Camp Sierra and go beyond it. You will soon come to a turn in the road - a right angle left. Within a short distance (about 100 feet) the clear road goes slightly north by northeast. Leave the cleared road and go slightly north westward along a barely recognizable woods road. You can see the eventual connection with the Young Hill Road on Google maps and the suture of the tree tops shows the location of the straight road from Young Hill Road to Richardson Hollow. The discontinued road may be navigable up an incline and there used to be a farmer's rock wall which formed a right angle separating the woods road from the old farm land. Walk northwest from the inside corner of the rock wall fence and you should reach a naturally rounded rock ledge, about 15-20 feet high. The ledge is probably 150-200 feet west from the abandoned woods road. Walk north along the east side of the ledge until you get to a small depression with water (20 x 30 feet, depending on the season) abutting the ledge. Scramble up the low ledge. You should be on the chrysoberyl occurrence. The top surface of the ledge is fairly flat and the area is probably thickly wooded unless some logging was done. You will have to search for float boulders to find chrysoberyl and sillimanite. I am not sure how extensive the productive area is. Bring drinking water and don't collect on a hot day.
