The town of Agordo was an important mining centre, due to the presence in the surrounding district of various base-metal mines, the most important of which was the Valle Imperina mine (active from the beginning of the 15th century to 1963). In 1867, just after the annexation of Veneto to the Kingdom of Italy, the second mining school in Italy was founded here through the decree of the Minister of Industry Quintino Sella.

The southermost sector of the Agordo municipal territory (Col di Foglia and the area near the hamlet of Giove) is characterised by the presence of pre-Hercynian metamorphic rocks (mainly carbonaceous and chloritic phyllites). Pyrite cubic crystals are found in carbonaceous and chloritic phyllites; siderite crystals, as brownish curved rhombohedral crystals of 2-3 cm, can be found in chloritic phyllites only.

The most known mineral of the Agordo area is aragonite (see the localities Castagneto and Col di Foglia, Agordo, and Val del Mus, Voltago Agordino), which appears as colourless to white acicular crystals to 1-2 cm long in geodic cavities embedded in red beds of the Upper Permian Val Gardena Sandstone formation and occasionally also in phyllites.
