Name(s) in local language(s):
Mina Navidad
The mine name translates to "Nativity" (Christmas) Mine. "Mina Abasolo" and "Mina Rodeo" are misnomers derived from the name of the nearest village and municipality. Arguably, using both Abasolo and Rodeo in addition to Municipality of Rodeo is confusing. 35 km NW of Rodeo.
Navidad is a brecciated fluorite vein that has been mined intermittently for many years. Massive fluorite is the principal product, but the vein is very vuggy and large numbers of plates of distinctive octahedral fluorite crystals, often coated with fine-grained quartz or chalcedony, can be collected fairly easily. Most specimens are plates of touching octahedral crystals, isolated crystals are less common. Dealers commonly use hydrofluoric acid to remove the siliceous coating, and the matrix is therefore frequently pitted and crumbly bleached white quartz. The fluorites are naturally dark purple, almost black, but turn a lovely pink colour after a few months' exposure to the sun. Almost all of what is seen in the market is sun bleached, and many have benefitted from "luster in a can".
The creedite occurs in clay-filled breccia voids in the same vein. Many appear to grow suspended in the clay and have no apparent point of attachment. Their colour ranges from colourless and transparent through shades of orange and brown to black depending on the amount and type of inclusion. Violet coloured specimens are known, but rare. Cleavage fragments of fluorite are often trapped in or on the creedite crystals, adding green or violet accents. Creedite locally overgrows sparkly white gearksutite.
In late 2019 radiating flower-like groups of pale to medium pink to lavender creedite crystals up to 1 cm long were found on green and purplish fluorite.
