The J. Duncan and L.W. Buzzard Quarry is an abandoned and flooded quarry for building stone and aggregate located in the NE ¼ of Section 2, Williston, Allen Township, Ottawa County. The rocks exposed in the quarry are identified as part of the Lockport Dolomite (Carlson, 2015, p. 165). This locality was referred to as an unidentified “old quarry” by Sparling (1965) and Carlson (1991, 2015).
This quarry was first operated in the 1890s by James Duncan and L.W. Buzzard. Topographic maps published in the 1930s show that the aggregate that was quarried here was transported by the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railroad, itself leased to the New York, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad. Historical aerials dating back to the 1950s showed the quarry already abandoned and filled with water.
Dale Sparling (1965, p. 172) visited the site and noted celestine crystals in the strata exposed above the water level. The celestine was of similar quality as the celestine found at the quarries of Genoa and Clay Center.
