A former quarry located on the eastern bank of the Sandusky River in the city of Tiffin (based on fairly recent accession of the area by the city corporation). The rocks described at the quarry is the Greenfield Dolomite Formation (Carlson, 1991).
This quarry was first described by Winchell (1873) with having cavities containing crystals of calcite and celestine and later by Carlson (1991, 2015) who described that the quarry was along the east bank of the Sandusky River. Winchell (1873) described the quarry as being approximately 27 feet, 9 inches in depth and produced a variety of coral and bivalve fossil specimens. This was the third quarry in Tiffin described by Winchell (1873), hence “Quarry No. 3.”
An 1874 historical map of Tiffin, Ohio revealed that a “Lime Kiln & Quarry” shows a location on the eastern bank of the Sandusky River and at the southern limits of Tiffin which seems to validate the observations by Winchell (1873). The approximate location of the quarry is south of Martha Street and northwest of the intersection of Sycamore Woods Lane, Sycamore Street and Hampden Park Road. Historic aerials dating back to 1959 reveal the site had long been filled in. According to the 1874 historical map, Quarry No. 3 was located adjacent to properties belonging to a “J. Klupp” and a “W. Klupp”. It is unknown whether or not they operated the quarry.
