The mines were in operation between 1885 to 1973.

From Müller at al (2015):
"The major rock type in the Knaben district is weakly foliated, porphyric reddish biotite granite with an intrusion age of ca. 1036 Ma belonging to the Mesoproterozoic Sirdal Magmatic belt. The porphyric granite contains mega screens and xenoliths of amphibolite and flaser gneiss in an area >10 km long (N-S) and 1 km wide (E-W).
In the Kinaben 2 and Ørnehommen mines the porphyric granite is intruded by grey, quartz-rich granite with disseminated molybdenite. Latter is assumed to be the primary source of molybdenum.
Coarse-grained molybdenite mineralization is commonly associated with ductile deformed, pegmatitic quartz bands and in one case with a large (300x150x5 m) pegmatite (Kvina mine)."

NOTE Ronald Werner April 2021:
I base the registrations done by me on Müller (2015) and the Riksantikvaren.no. Most of these registrations are probably spot-on, but in a few cases there will be a margin of error, and it is very well possible that the registrations of the Riksantikvaren are not 100% reliable and also that maybe some localities were overseen.
