The history of tailings in the Heřmanice dump, nowadays the most important partly burning dump of the Czech part of the Upper Silesian Basin, dates back from 1942 to 1990. The dump was used for storage of waste from several bituminous coal mines in the northern part of the Ostrava part of the USCB (Ida Mine, Viktoria - Generalissimus Stalin II - Rudý Říjen – Heřmanice Mine) and consists of several separately stored parts. The base of the dump consists of two historic conical heaps, which were later lowered and the area around them was subsequently filled with new mining waste. The dump has a total volume of around 20 million m3 and a maximum height of 58 m. The fire was initiated in the early 1990s in the southeastern part of the dump and spread northwards towards the eastern conical heap. The dump fire is gradually being handled by extraction, and a plant for the treatment of the unburned part of the dump in order to separate the coal component has been built here.
