The old dam, located on the shore of a small bay of Lake Ladoga on the outskirts of the village of Yulya-Risti, 3 km from the town of Pitkyaranta, is a serie of blocks of banded calciphyres. These rocks were mined at the end of the 19th - beginning of the 20th century in a small quarry in the Ristiniemi peninsula and served as a flux for a blast furnace on the opposite side of a small bay, where iron ores were smelted. In these calciphyres, in addition to the predominant calcite, there are rock-forming amounts of diopside, tremolite, high-fluoric phlogopite, minerals of the humite group - norbergite and chondrodite, sometimes dolomite, quartz is abundant in places in the form of nodules, lenses and interlayers. Small amounts of fluorite, pyrrhotite, and spinel occur; in the contact zones with essentially silicate rocks, biotite, amphibole of the actinolite–edenite series, and scapolite, usually replaced by fine-aggregate pink muscovite, are found.
