The Chiotas Reservoir, also known as Chiotas lake (Lago del Chiotas), is an artificial lake created between the end of the 1970s and the beginning of the 1980s, in the area of the former Piano del Chiotas (flooded), after the construction of the Chiotas and Colle Laura dams.
At the former Piano del Chiotas, an edenite-bearing limestone (marble) associated with gneiss and amphibolite was found in some roches moutonnées near the old Rifugio Genova (1914 m). Edenite, in the form of colourless prismatic crystals and grains, was analysed by Roccati (1905). The empirical formula recalculated on the basis of 23 oxygens is Na0.74Ca1.73(Mg4.23AlVI0.89)(AlIV1.17Si6.83)O23, in good accordance with the modern formula for edenite (Piccoli et al., 2007).
Titanite crystals up to 5 mm have been found in the Chiotas gorge during the excavation for the Chiotas dam foundation. The same mineral is also present in the screes downstream.
