A Cu-Ag-Au-Pb-Zn-onyx marble (travertine) mining area located in T.20S., R.15E., on the eastern slope of the Santa Rita Mountains. This district is only partly in Santa Cruz County, to the North of Gardner Canyon. The northern portion of the district is in southern Pima County.
Mineralization is varied: (1): Irregular and spotty copper and minor lead and zinc minerals with silver and weak gold values. Deposits are oxidized near the surface. Mineralization is controlled by major fault zones and intrusive contacts in strongly folded and faulted Triassic and Cretaceous sedimentary and volcanic rocks intruded by Triassic (?) to Tertiary plugs and dikes; and, (2) Onyx marble (travertine) deposit in a solution cave in faulted slices of Permian limestone.
Workings include relatively small shaft and tunnel operations. Prospected and mined intermittently up into the 1960's. Total production would amount to some 2,000 tons of ore containing about 20 tons of copper, 6,300 oz. of silver, 12 oz. of gold and a few hundred pounds of lead. Only a small amount of onyx marble was extracted.
