The Beerenberg volcano on the island of Jan Mayen (located 600 km north of Iceland, and part of Norway) is the northernmost active volcano on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. It reaches a height of 2277 m (Imsland 1986).
Major eruptions appear to have taken place every 150±75 years (Sylvester 1975), with the more recent activity, including eruptions in 1970 and 1985 (Sylvester 1975; Imsland 1986), having formed numerous cinder cones and trachyte domes.
