Official name: Borgo San Donino
Synonymes: Borgo San Donnino, Casignano, Cella di Costamezzana, Cusignano, Gabiano, Parma, Piacenza, Pieve di Cusignano, Varano, Varano de' Marchesi, Vignabona, Villa di Cella.
Observed fall: yes
Fall: 1808, April 19, 12:00 hrs
Coordinates (Catalogue of Meteorites): 44°52'N, 10°3'E
Approx. recovered weight: ?, 1435 g preserved (1970)
Chondrite, type LL6

On April 19, 1808, at 1200 hrs. several stones fell after detonations over some small villages (Pieve di Cusignano, Varano de' Marchesi, and Cella di Costamezzana) southwest of Fidenza (whose name until 1927 was Borgo San Donnino). Sgagnoni (1808) described the phenomenon and gave particular account of three of the fallen pieces, weighing 336, 750, and 1000 g respectively. Guidotti (1808) made an incomplete chemical analysis. The total weight of the Borgo San Donino stones was never exactly known. In 1970 the approximate weight of the fragments, widely distributed in museums and collections, was 1435 g (Baldanza et al., 1970). This value was estimated by Wülfing (1897) as 1516 g and by Leonard & de Violini (1956) as 1740 g.

Borgo San Donino is classified as a brecciated chondrite, type LL6. Its interior is grey and fine grained. Rare metallic granules are randomly present and range in size from the finest metallic dust to some amoeboid individuals having a maximum length of as much as 2 mm. Some roundish patches, with an average diameter of 1-2 mm, are easily distinguishable. The principal lithic minerals in the Borgo San Donino meteorite are forsterite (composition in the range Fa28-29 according to Mason, 1963, Burragato, 1967, and Baldanza et al., 1970) and orthopyroxene. Fine-grained plagioclase (An9-10) is present both in matrix and chondrules. Among the minor constituents of the Borgo San Donino, Levi-Donati (1970) noted the interstitial presence of maskelynite, the metastable "diaplectic glass" of plagioclasic origin. The opaque components include troilite, nickel-iron alloys (abundant taenite and rare kamacite), chromite, ilmetite, and hematite.

Notes:
- Although the correct spelling of the site of the fall is Borgo San Donnino, the official name of this meteorite is Borgo San Donino for reason given by Hey (1966) in Catalogue of Meteorites.

- Pieve di Cusignano is located in the municipal territory of Fidenza (formerly Borgo San Donnino); Varano dei Marchesi, also known as Varano de' Marchesi or Varano Marchesi, is located in the municipal territory of Medesano; Cella di Costamezzana is located in the municipal territory of Noceto.
