Other/historical names associated with this locality:
, Ben Lomond, Aerodrome Road (fault), Taupo source obsidian
Obsidian appears in outcrops on both sides of the road.
".... the flow stratigraphy, best seen at the Poihipi roadcut, is a section through the lava flow carapace comprising: finely vesicular pumice (FVP) with platy obsidian clasts; spherulitic black obsidian (OBS); and pinkish pumiceous breccia that cuts both the FVP and OBS units." (Stevenson et al, 1994)
A second excavation has been started on the Northern side of the road, a few metres further East and this has uncovered an area of vuggy, ribbons of obsidian (2018).
On the Southern side a new excavation has been started (2020), a few metres further West and cuts into the side of the hill revealing pumice, banded fhyolite and solid blocks of black obsidian. Small amounts of mahogany obsidian are also reported from here.
