In the eastern part of Groix island the largest sandy beaches where heavy sands exist are located, unlike in the western part of the island which consists mainly of steep cliffs.
The main eastern coastal deposits are located near Trec'h beach, the Grands Sables and the Sables Rouges area (north Porh Coustic / Nosterven).
As for the latter locality, the mineralized deposit can reach one meter thick up to the bed-rock. The content of garnets there would exceed 80% of the heavy sands.
The heavy minerals and particularly garnets, so abundant in the island's metamorphic rocks, are therefore concentrated in the "sands mirror": this "cliff reflection" constitutes a decisive argument for the main proximal origin to Groix heavy sands. (Louis Chauris).
