Name(s) in local language(s):
Otočić Brusnik (Scoglio Brusnik; Scoglio Mellisello), Splitsko-dalmatinska županija, Hrvatska
Uninhabited volcanic islet in the Adriatic Sea, located about 3.5 km south-east of the small island of Svetac (also known as Sveti Andrija in Croatian and Sant'Andrea in Italian) and 23 km west of the island of Vis (Lissa). It administrativelly belongs to the municipality of Komiža (Comisa).
Brusnik islet (Scoglio Mellisello or Meliselo in Italian) is a low, serrated ridge, rising only 23 metres above the sea level (surface area ~0.049 km2). In the very centre of the islet, there is a small hollow, partially filled with sea water. The strand on the northwestern side of Brusnik, facing Svetac (Sveti Andrija) island, is made of pebbles and huge boulders, up to 50 cm in size. The scenic boulders, with perfect rounded shapes, due to continuous marine abrasion, was used as ballast in fishing boats. Therefore, they were distributed around other Adriatic islands, found in some caves as firestones, confusing geologists and archaeologists on their origin. The name Brusnik ('grindstone' in English) suggests the use of the rough stone surface as a grindstone.
