Ordinary chondrite (H6)

A weathered meteoritic stone was recovered. A visual inspection reveals pervasive staining, clasts [sometimes large], and bright Fe-Ni metal aggregates. Olivine composition [Fa20], orthopyroxene ['bronzite' variety] and equilibrated textures are characteristic of the the H6 (relatively low iron) ordinary chondrite geochemical group. Plagioclase is largely interstitial. While Ramdohr (1973) found primary kamacite, taenite, chromite and schreibersite in his study of opaque minerals, he also found pervasive weathering as well. Thus, chondritic magnetite is primary (preterrestrial) in a number of ordinary chondrites, but the magnetite reported here is a terrestrial weatherate. The pervasive weathering may account for the fact that Boerne has not appeared in many meteoritic studies.
H chondrites represent ~ 45% of all well classified ordinary chondrites with the H6 petrologic type accounting for approximately one quarter of the group. The main mass [~400 g] has been at U.S. National Museum (Washington) with smaller masses at the TCU/Monnig Collection and at Arizona State University [45.9 g in 2016].
