Alluvial gold was discovered here in 1869 whilst sinking a well for water. The ensuing rush saw many shafts and pits excavated, these were developed on quartz-iron oxide-pyrite lodes in host slate of the Burra Group.
Intermittent activity continued until the 1890s with further mining for alluvial gold taking place in Thomas Dyer's paddock. Gold was found in two gutters along a short gully to the main road. Some sites claimed to produce as much as 6oz per week, with nuggets to 2oz.
Re-worked briefly in the 1930s, total production for the area, including Lady Edith and Uraidla (Bolland's) mines has been estimated at 2,000oz (62.2kg).
