Iron meteorite, plessitic octahedrite (I-ung, O-pl)
Find 1874; 41 kg

A mass of about 40 kg was plowed up by a farmer named Abram Crabbe, living near Butler. Crabbe took the mass to a blacksmith who cut off a piece after heating it. The heated end has been altered, but the other end was left relatively intact. The meteorite's properties and history have been thoroughly described by Buchwald (1975). Undamaged specimens have a peculiar Widmanstätten structure of kamacite lamellae with pointed ends while taenite and plessite occupy ~ 80 vol% of the meteorite. Troilite and lesser amounts of graphite and schreibersite are among the accessory minerals. In recent years a new mineral, nickelphosphide, a Ni-rich analogue of schreibersite, was identified in Butler and, subsequently, in a number of additional meteorites.

Butler is one of 117 iron meteorites listed as an ungrouped iron (1106 listed in early December 2014). It is suspected that these ungrouped irons are probably stray remnants of tens or even scores of disrupted asteroids.

Butler specimens are held at Harvard University (>12 kg in 2000) and a number of other institutions.
