The Mount Martin Gold Mine is 40 kilometres south of Kalgoorlie, and 3 kilometres east of the Jubilee processing plant. It is presently a relatively shallow abandoned open pit, centred on the Mount Martin and Swift deposits. Block 45.
Hampton Properties Limited, developed underground mining here via shafts in 1924. The deepest shaft reached 225 feet deep, with sulphide ore below 200 feet, and oxidised ore above. Within months, the mine was on the verge of closing. The Inspector of Mines on a visit pointed out additional ore to extract, but to little avail.
In the mid 1930's, Mulline Development Syndicate NL held an option over the lease, which it sold for 2000 pounds cash, and a further 4000 pounds from gold won at 15%, to the Mount Martin Gold Mines Ltd. 72 acres. Hampton Properties Ltd still owned the land.
Operations soon ceased again due to the lack of payable ore. Remarkably the company still controlled the mine in 1950, when an 18 month option was given to another company.
New Hampton Goldfields developed a shallow pit, until mining ended September 1997. Australian Mines Limited had acquired the mine from Harmony Gold in 2007, in 2009 sub-leased it to Dioro.
They deepened the central pit area, extracting 743 223 tonnes of ore at 1.5 g/t yielding 31 321 ounces of gold.
After the lease expired, Australian Mines Limited took over again, but shortly after sold the mine for 7.5 million $A. In 2012 Alacer Gold controlled the lease.
The deposit is in a greenstone belt of komatiite and fine grained variable sulphide sediments, with subsidiary mafic rocks, all tightly folded and structurally complex.
Gold mineralisation is associated with a series of stacked, west dipping sulphide and quartz-carbonate bearing lodes. This is mainly hosted within deformed and altered chloritic schists, sandwiched between talc-carbonate ultramafics.
