The Empress of India Gold Mine was 10 kilometres east of Kalgoorlie, along the Bulong Road. It was adjacent to the Corsair mine, on the same lode, and the mine shared a similar fate, being copper rich, but gold poor.
The Empress of India Gold Mining Syndicate was formed in November 1895. After much trouble obtaining the leases from the vendors there was only five months of development work. In July 1896, the mine was floated in London as the Hannans Virginia Gold Mining and Development Company Limited. They paid the former syndicate 5000 pounds for the lease, with 10 000 fully paid shares.
Development continued into 1897, then the trail goes cold. It was an ironstone and quartz lode, showing a little gold, copper, and much arsenopyrite. Like Corsair, it also notes a stone resembling chlorargyrite, but is unconfirmed.
The company was wound up late 1899.
The Mindat co-ordinates are approximate and represent the Corsair line of lode, the mine is sited along.
