Mentioned in passing in 1896, 1902 and 1906. The location is approximately 25 kilometres from Kanowna, less than 50 metres north of the Kanowna-Kurnalpi Road, north of the Lake Penny salt-pan. A very small area of old alluvial workings exist probably from the dates mentioned above.
A mid 2017 visit revealed open pit mining in full swing. The Kurnalpi Road has been diverted, with the pit being dug across the former alignment of the road. Mining is being taken under contract for Empire Resources Limited (60%), and Brimstone Resources (40% ownership).
A 2012 JORC resource of 470 000 tonnes of ore at 4.4 g/t producing 66 800 ounces of gold, and Probable 146 000 tonnes of ore at 4.62 g/t. The pit will reach a depth of 80 metres, and underground mining after this will access 170 000 tonnes of ore at 5.4 g/t.
The deposit contains auriferous narrow quartz veins, occupying the north-south trending, east dipping, Penny's Find shear zone. The shear has developed at the contact of sediments/felsic rock, with overlying mafic volcanics. Weathering varies from deeply in sedimentary rocks at the Footwall (siltstone narrow bands in felsic volcanic units), to shallower weathering on the Hanging Wall. The lode is cut to the north by a complex series of faults.
