"Basaltic eruption took place at, or close to, sea level, and volcanoclastic deposits at each centre include agglomerates, sub-aqueous breccias of terrestrial origin, and laharic breccias. Associated flow and dyke rocks are well-jointed, fine-grained alkali olivine basalts which display little variation in their petrographic, mineralogical, and chemical characters" (Spratt and Rodgers, 1975).

A relatively small rock unit, the Ngatutura Volcanics, comprises a group of sixteen alkali basaltic lavas, dykes, volcanic breccias, scoria cones, produced by Pliocene strombolian volcanic eruptions. It does not relate to a specific specimen site, or mine location of interest.

The Ngatutura Volcanics is located on the west coast of the North Island, in a relatively remote area, centred on the fairly insignificant Ohuka Stream.
