Wheel Ellen

The Wheal Ellen was developed by brothers T. and B. Johnston from Geraldton, on a small but very rich shoot of gold. For 200 tonnes in 1906, produced 3000 ounces. GML 168B.

A company was floated in Melbourne, and it was over subscribed five times over in a few hours. All the investors had to go on was past results, and some rich specimens from the mine displayed in Melbourne.

After the Johnstons took their cut, only ₤2000 was left as working capital, and none of this was used. It is claimed the Johnstons and possibly the promoter were aware the shoot had petered out before the float.

The local paper was critical of the float from the beginning, stating the small leader was not enough to float a company. Some (but not all) the money was returned to shareholders once it was discovered the mine was a duffer, and threats of legal action. In return the shareholders released the mine back to the Johnstons.

They continued prospecting until 1909, sinking the shaft eventually to 200 feet, but no further rich leads were found.

Note: WA Mines lists this mine - incorrectly - as Wheel Ellen.
