In the late 1890's, the Mildura Gold Mine was the principal mine for the Norseman Gold Mines NL. This company had been floated in London in February 1896 with 250,000 pounds capital. It controlled the area east of Norseman totalling 140 acres along a north-south line of hills. The Hardy mine is just to the north, and Bullen mine just to the north-west. The Viking mine is south south-west, all at relatively short distances. The mine was originally pegged by a prospector called Sinclair (surname).
The shaft reached 500 feet. Around 200 men were employed by the company during this period. Norseman at this time was the biggest gold mining centre outside of Kalgoorlie. Many businesses had been established in the newly created town. The lack of water was the main drawback. But mining is a fickle business, and by 1901, the company was in difficulties. Some employees volunteered labour, with wages paid only if gold was found. This kept the mine active another 6 months, but then it closed.
After this the mine was operated by several tributing parties for a number of years. H. Evans/T. Greer; W.B. Jones/A. Crooks/G. Rogers; Cox/Vallancy; Motherston; Fitzgerald, Spargo/Ross are some of the names of tributers found at the mine until 1909.
The Cumberland Company purchased the battery in 1906, and moved it elsewhere. Rawlins and Bullen took over the lease in 1910, having been abandoned by the Norseman Gold Mines company. A further crushing by an un-named party was found in 1921. The only subsequent mention was in 1933, when Norseman Gold Mines NL had control again of the lease, and are sampling the 53 000 tonnes of tailings at the mine.
