Ordinary chondrite, unequilibrated (L3.4; S3)
Fall, 1 February 1944; 1456 g
During the afternoon a single stone fell 25 km from Västervik and several fragments were recovered. Average Olivine composition (Fa25) is characteristic of L (low bulk Iron) chondrites, but marked variability of both olivine (Fa0-30) and pyroxene as well as milder Ni-variability in kamacite mark Hallingeberg more specifically as an unequilibrated L-chondrite (L3.4). Distinct chondrules of markedly variabilities and textures are present.
As of early September 2015, 44 meteorites had been classified as 'Unequilibrated Ordinary Chondrites' (UOC) at the Meteoritical Society's Meteoritical Bulletin Database. Of these. 12 meteorites belonged to the L group of ordinary chondrites, but Hallingeberg is the only UOC specifically classified as an L3.4 UOC.
Most of the mass (>1 kg, including the large 685 g fragment) has been held at Lund University.
