The Massif du Canigou is a massif of the French Pyrenees in the department of the Pyrénées-Orientales (Eastern Pyrenees). Its highest peak is represented by el Pica del Canigo (le Pic du Canigou), at 2,784 meters.
The Massif du Canigou is the closest Pyrenean mountain to the Mediterranean Sea. Visible from all Catalonia and sometimes even from Marseille, its impressive look makes it a symbol for Catalan people and it was even believed until the nineteenth century that the Canigou was the highest mountain of the whole Pyrenees. It separates both Catalan historic regions of Conflent and Vallespir, its oriental side called the Aspres. In July 2012 the natural site obtained the French official label "Grand Site de France". For centuries the mountain was an important iron mining area, but all the mines have now been closed for decades.
