SARIG Mineral Deposit Information, Site No:374622, Deposit No:3137, states: "Copper deposits on and near the western shores of Pernatty Lagoon (i.e. presumably the Main Open Cut and Lagoon Workings) were discovered in 1895 by Mr F. Young (Johns, 1968). Grey copper sulphides and green carbonates sub-outcropped in ferruginous sandstones beneath several centimetres of mud about 50 metres from the shore (Brown, 1908)."
in contrast Creelman (2005) states that the deposit was found in 1873, with mining commencing in 1875, mostly in transitional (semi-oxidised) ores.
