Gisements de Labradorite, Sainte-Agathe-Des-Monts
Labradorite phenocrystals are relatively common in coarse-grained anorthosites in the area of Sainte-Agathe-Des-Monts. These anorthosites are part of the Morin AMCG (Anorthosite-Mangerite-Charnocktite-Granite) Suite. Only a portion of the anorthosites of the Morin AMCG Suite contain iridescent labradorite; the most common type of anorthosite in this geological formation is reddish-brown, with no iridescence, and is medium to coarse grained, sometimes pegmatitic. It is composed of ~70-90% plagioclase (Labradorite and/or Andesine), and ~10-30% accessory minerals (Hypersthene, Augite, Biotite, Ilmenite, Orthoclase, Apatite, Quartz, Magnetite). Iridescent labradorite is usually found as 1/2" to 6" long phenocrystals, in a black anorthosite.
