Te Hapua Quarry is a road metal quarry that is only worked occasionally and is located approximately 7 km from Waitiki Landing on the road to Te Hapua. The quarry is situated in Cretaceous Tangihua Complex volcanics which are comprised here of hyaloclastites, basalt-dolerite flow(s), breccias and pillow lavas. As with the rest of the Tangihua Volcanics it has been pervasively zeolitised as a result of hydrothermal alteration by heated seawater circulating through rock fractures and joints. In general, zeolitisation in the Tangihua Volcanics can be divided into three main stages (after Black, 1989 and Tschernich, 1992):
1. Early - laumontite, analcime, heulandite, mordenite
2. Mid-stage - stilbite, chabazite, thomsonite, clinoptilolite, natrolite, apophyllite
3. Late - calcite, pyrite, siderite, barite
(Note: Minerals in italics have not yet been found at Te Hapua.)
