Other/historical names associated with this locality:
Cairn 1; Lake Moore pegmatite

The pegmatite forms a conspicous conical hill on the west bank of the Thirty One River, west of the Morrissey Hill, Nardoo and Cairns mining centres. The Lake Moore pegmatite is probably the same deposit (Jacobson et al., 2007).

It was first mined by R.A. Williamson from Carnarvon at an unknown time, and the mining created two shallow pits. The lease was later taken over in 1977 by Esso Exploration for Uranium, then Jays Exploration until the licence was reliquished in 1982. (Op cit.)

The pegmatite is covered and hidden by silcrete. The pegmatite has been largely weathered to kaolinite. Some smokey quartz core segments can be found, containing masses of radiating manganocolumbite crystals surrounding a core of intergrown uranpyrochlore and uranmicrolite. Uranpyrochore specimens form dark brown, glassy, highly lustrous metamict masses with rust brown coatings. Uranmicrolite is also associated as yellow glassy lustrous metamict masses. The pegmatite also contains chrysoberyl specimens. (Op cit.)
