Romsås nikkelgruver, Kykkelsrud, Askim, Indre Østfold, Østfold, Norge
Located at Kykkelsrud 4 km of Askim. The mines is now a touristic attraction.
Close to the orebody and the mines, a popular rock locally called "potetstein" (potatostone) occurs. The rock is now protected by law, and collecting this rock is strictly forbidden. The rock, is a norite ("kulenoritt" is the technical term used in Norwegian literature) and consist mainly of nut- to potato-sized spheres of radiating aggregates of bronzite crystals.
Historically, the company Roms Nikkelverk commenced mining on the Romsås deposit in 1866 and maintained continuous activity until 1876, when the deposit closed and never came into production again. Total ore production from the Romsås deposit was roughly estimated at 13,205 tons with a nickel content of about 125–130 t. The average ore grade at Romsas was 1.07 wt% Ni (+ Co) and 0.4 wt% Cu.
The Romsås intrusion is an almost 1 km-long intrusion with rounded shape displaying an approximately NW-SE elongation. The intrusion comprises undifferentiated quartz-norite with local orbicular texture. The host rock to the intrusion is a garnet-biotite-quartz gneiss, but the relationship between the intrusion and host rock is not well exposed in the field. Four old mining adits, previously used for Ni sulfide mining, are still preserved around the intrusion. The orbicular quartz-norite occurs in mostly 5- to 10-m-long zones within the intrusion and is characterized by nodules, of approximately 10 cm in diameter, comprising plagioclase and orthopyroxene. The orbicular zones grade progressively into a medium-grained quartz-norite, which does not contain nodules. The zones containing the orbicular textures are protected sites, and thus sampling is not allowed. Ni-Cu-Co mineralization comprising disseminated, net-textured and massive sulfides.
