Koroit opal field.
Workings are open cut to a depth of about 30 ft, and underground to the maximum depth of about 65ft using hand mining methods from small diameter shafts. There is no systematic method to mining; it is largely hit-and-miss.
Opals are hosted in the Wallumbilla Formation and equivalents, a major stratigraphic unit throughout the Cretaceous basins of eastern Australia comprising argillaceous detrital sediments consisting of marine grey mudstones and siltstones with minor interbeds of fine-grained glauconitic and calcareous sandstone, local thin micritic limestone beds (individiual grains not discernable; originating as a soft carbonate mud) and heavy mineral strandline accumulations; down-sequence glacial ice-rafted erratics. It marks a significant change in lithology where sandy Jurassic to Early Cretaceous fluvial and lacustrine continental sedimentation was swamped by a muddier marine incursion from the north during the lower Cretaceous (100 Ma). This muddy blanket is the Wallumbilla Formation.
