Dabtar, Davdar, Davtar, Dabuda'er
Located in the western Kunlun Mts (Kunlun Shan) and close to the Afghan border.
Until 2005 when the origin of the new material was disclosed, illegal emerald production from Davdar and neighboring sites was traded in Peshawar and Dubai, then subsequently making its way to India, Thailand and Hong Kong for final processing and marketing. While it is difficult to estimate the Davdar emerald production since 2000, what is known is that commercial quality rough and fine emerald crystals have been produced since the end of 2008 and the beginning of 2009. The new deposit is located in the Tashkurgan Tajik Autonomous County in the southwest region of the province of Xinjiang, very near China's borders with Pakistan, Tajikistan and Afghanistan. The mining area can easily be reached by flying into major inland cities such as the province capital of Urimqui or to Kashgar, with further travel via the Karakoram Highway to Tashkurgan (Taxkurgan) and the village of Davdar. The mines lay surprisingly close to this major road, just east of Davdar (elevation 3,620m). Only open to traffic between May 1 and December 31 of every year, the Karakoram is the highest paved international road in the world. Commonly known in China as the "Friendship Highway," it connects China and Pakistan across the Karakoram mountain range, through the Khunjerab Pass (elevation 4,693m). Its construction in late 2003, new emerald material from a deposit in the Chinese province of Xinjiang became available in Pakistani gem markets. Several joint Chinese-Pakistani ventures resulted in the rapid development of significant business activity between the traditional emerald producing area of Mingora in the Swat Valley and the gem hub of Peshawar, both in Pakistan.
