An island now connected to the mainland.
Captain James Cook first sighted Nobbys Island from his ship "Endeavour" 10 May 1770.
The island was not named Nobbys until 1810. (Note: the name does not have an apostrophe).
Construction of a pier built to join Nobbys Island to the mainland was ordered by Governor Macquarie in 1818 as Newcastle was, at that time the main penal settlement in the colony. Convict labour was used until 1822, when Newcastle ceased to be a penal settlement. Following the removal of most convicts to Port Macquarie in 1822, it wasn't until 1833 that the Governor allocated funding to complete the pier and breakwater. Convict gangs were again used and the pier was completed in 1846. However, the pier and breakwater was frequently breached by storms. In 1866 the Government announced the intention to rebuild the breakwater and was finally completed in 1873.
Nobbys island was reduced in height by rock taken to construct the pier from approximately 43m to 27.5m.
