A tunnel through the basalt constructed to carry water for Newark. Fenner(1908)says this tunnel was "driven ... a number of years ago" and "passed almost directly beneath the Francisco Brothers quarry". Fenner (1908) also indicates that the tunnel passed through pillow lava and mentions "glassy crusts, crystal-lined vugs...".
In October, 1922 the North Jersey District Water Supply Commission opened 5 bids for it's Wanaque Aqueduct — Great Notch Tunnel project. One of the bid lines was "for the enlargement of the tunnel in rock". Subsequently, a Mr. Hoadley reported to the June 14th, 1923 meeting of the Philadelphia Mineralogical Society on "the digging of a water tunnel by the Newark Water Co. near Great Notch, N. J. which passes under the floor of the old Francesco Quarry. The minerals from the new boring are the same as formerly found at the Quarry; gmelinite, calcite, heulandite, stilbite, amethyst, smoky quartz, prehnite."
The minerals encountered were similar to those of the Francisco quarry and other pillow lava localities in the region. The species list for the water tunnel is undoubtedly attenuated from those of the quarries due to its relatively small size.
