A mafic pegmatite about 2 miles north of Mellen is described as having zircon crystals up to 19 cm long and 0.5 cm wide, associated with hornblende, plagioclase and biotite. This was likely exposed either in or near the the now abandoned "black granite" (anorthosite) quarries near Loon Lake.
