Valle di Darengo (Val Darengo), Provincia di Como, Lombardia, Italia

Darengo Valley is the right-side branch of the main Livo Valley (the left branch is known as Bares Valley), which ends at the northwestern corner of Lake Como, near the small town of Gravedona.

Val Piana, the main right-side tributary valley, joins Darengo valley near Dangri hamlet. At Dangri hamlet (697 m) an old stone bridge allows to enter the pathway to Capanna Como hut, the highest Alpine refuge in the upper Darengo Valley.

Darengo Valley is a very wild place: the lower part, from the Dangri bridge to the Borgo one, is very difficult to explore, because of the lack of footpaths, deep running water and high risk of stone fallss from the gorge sides, very narrow and unstable.

Departing from Dangri in a 2-hours-walk, you can reach the abandoned hamlet of Borgo at 1070 m. The old bridge was reconstructed after the main 1983 flood. Here, the valley floor widens and it is possible to start searching for minerals in the streambed.

Many morphological elements remind of the last glacial maximum age, such as sand, gravel and stones scarred by glacial erosion on moraine deposits. More structural clues are many landslides, such as the great one of Sasso Marcio near Borgo hamlet.

In this very wild place, the simplest way to find minerals is looking for them along the main streambed, where large stones fell from the valley sides.

A typical field collecting area is the southwestern slope of Pizzo Ledù, with a lot of loose pegmatite boulders and outcrops.

Pegmatites are part of the so-called Bodengo pegmatite area, a large region including the upper portions of a series of valleys (Leggia and Cama valleys, Moesa, Graubünden, Switzerland; Bodengo, Soè and Garzelli valleys, Sondrio Province, Lombardy, Italy; Dosso, Darengo, and Bares valleys, Como Province, Lombardy, Italy) located between the Mesolcina (west) and Mera (east) valleys, Southern Steep Belt of the Central Alps.
