A former U-Be-REE-Bi-Nb-Ta-Garnet-Feldspar-Mica mine located in secs. 21 & 26, T17N, R12W, G&SRM (sec. 26, T17N, R14W - Meeves), 16.1 km (10.0 miles) NNE of Wikieup, at the mouth of Tule Wash, about 30 miles South of Hackberry and about 55 miles SE of Kingman on the W side of the Aquarius Mountains, on Bureau of Land Management administered land. Owned by L.L. Edgerton and the Waldren Mining Co.
The road to the mine is gated about one half mine S of the mine due to a grazing lease; however, the mine is on federal land (Bureau of Land Management property, and is open to public trespass. GPS N34-49-37.50 W113-31-33.13. (submitted by Jerry A. Baird).
Mineralization is comprised of tabular granite pegmatites with 2 to 40 feet (12 meters) wide, hosted in granite. The primary mode of origin was magmatic differentiation. Primary ore control was fracturing. Parallel pegmatite dikes 2 to 100 feet wide and up to 2,000 feet long. Strike and dip were given as N85E with a dip of 30-40NE (sic). Local rocks include Early Proterozoic granitic rocks.
Workings include surface and underground openings comprised of several surface cuts: No. 1 = 60 feet long; No. 2 = the eastern cut across a pegmatite 40 feet long and 8 to 10 feet wide by 25 feet high (at face); No. 3 = a small pit; and, No. 4 = a discovery (prospect cut); an adit, a shaft.
Production was 7-8 tons of yttrotantalite ore, small amounts of monazite and gadolinite were yielded also.
Analytical data results: Yttrotantalite pegmatite composition: Yt2O3 38.86%, Ce2O3 11.50%, BeO 11.50%, FeO 11.56%, SiO2 24.21%.

ⓘ Chevkinite-(Ce) Formula: Ce4(Ti,Fe2+,Fe3+)5O8(Si2O7)2 Description: Chemical analyses show this to be chevkinite-(Ce); ceria = 25.29%, lanthania (+Di) 18.35%, and yttria 1.50% (Kaufman and Jaffe, 1946). |
ⓘ Formula: Fe2+2Fe3+((Si,Fe3+)2O5)(OH)4 Description: Kaufman and Jaffe (1946) state the "lowest refractive index [of this specimen] is equal to 1.805". No other data collected. Data are in conflict with that of true cronstedtite. Heinrich (1960) merely relists the previous article. This is the only report of cronstedtite from a granite pegmatite and appears incorrect until verification can be made. |
