A rhyolite formation containing mineral-bearing lithophysae. The site is located approximately 5 miles south of the southern boundary of Yellowstone National Park and 20 miles north north west of Moran, Wyoming. Site was first examined in 1886.

Detailed Mineral List:

Augite
Formula: (CaxMgyFez)(Mgy1Fez1)Si2O6
Description: As light yellow-green inclusions in rhyolite host-rock of lithophysae, commonly partially altered
'Biotite'
Formula: K(Fe2+/Mg)2(Al/Fe3+/Mg/Ti)([Si/Al/Fe]2Si2O10)(OH/F)2
Description: Occurs sparingly as small, thin hexagonal crystals in lithophysae
Fayalite
Formula: Fe2+2SiO4
Description: In lithophysae as stout crystals to 1mm in length, commonly exhibiting an outer zone of alteration to iron oxides but with a glassy core. Wet chemical analysis by Iddings and Penfield showed both Fe and Mg present.
'Hornblende Root Name Group' ?
Formula: ◻Ca2(Z2+4Z3+)(AlSi7O22)(OH,F,Cl)2
Description: An amphibole-group mineral occurs sparsely in lithophysae as stout prisms to 0.5mm with brilliant faces, appearing brown in thin section. Iddings and Penfield called this material "horblende" but its conformity with modern amphibole nomenclature is uncertain.
Magnetite
Formula: Fe2+Fe3+2O4
Description: As large opaque black grains in rhyolite
Opal
Formula: SiO2 · nH2O
Description: As translucent coatings on quartz crystals occurring in lithophysae.
Opal var. Opal-AN
Formula: SiO2 · nH2O
Description: As translucent coatings on quartz crystals occurring in lithophysae.
'Plagioclase'
Formula: (Na,Ca)[(Si,Al)AlSi2]O8
Description: As inclusions in rhyolite host-rock of lithophysae
Quartz
Formula: SiO2
Description: a) as sharp, stubby prismatic crystals to 5mm (average 2mm) long in lithophysae; crystals are transparent and exhibit pale smoky color. b) as slender white prisms to 10mm in length, commonly full of cracks and often covered with a crust of hyalite opal. c) as inclusions in rhyolite host-rock of lithophysae For a contemporary crystal drawing: http://www.mindat.org/photo-196234.html
Sanidine
Formula: K(AlSi3O8)
Description: a) as euhedral xls in lithophysae in rhyolite, forming thin crystals that are tabular parallel to the basal plane. b) as inclusions in rhyolite host-rock of lithophysae
Tridymite
Formula: SiO2
Description: As transparent crystals lining lithophysae; some cross-shaped twins were observed.
Zircon
Formula: Zr(SiO4)
Description: As grains commonly attached to magnetite and augite in rhyolite
