Name(s) in local language(s):
Giacimento di diopside del Monte Cervandone, Area del Monte Cervandone (Scherbadung; Cherbadung; incl. Conca del Cervandone; Ghiacciaio della Rossa), Alpe Devero, Baceno, Valle Devero, Valle Antigorio, Val d'Ossola, Provincia del Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, Piemonte, Italia

Outcrop of diopsidite, intercalated between antigorite schists of the Geisspfad ultramafic complex and gneiss of the Monte Leone nappe, at the base of the northeast slope of Monte Cervandone.

This locality was well known to the "strahlers" of the Binn valley, that exploited the diopside outcrop in the first half of the 1800s (Wiser, 1842). The locality indicated by the Swiss "strahlers" was "Binnthal" or, better, the obscure "Thierälpeli am Tscherwandùne", a local denomination for the area between Punta Marani/Schwarzhorn and Monte Cervandone. In the mineralogical literature of the 1800s and early 1900s, it was assumed that the locality for this diopside was in the Binn valley in Switzerland, and only Desbuissons (1909) recognised that its real location is on the Italian side. A thorough study on diopside crystals from this locality was performed by Bianchi (1920).

Despite the long-standing exploitation, this occurrence is not yet exhausted, and fine specimens of diopside and prehnite have been collected also in very recent times.
